I am writing this blog to share my experience of first national paper reading competition, as before I have presented my presentation on International conference. Every year Saurashtra University, Rajkot organised National Paper Reading Competition. This is the third time with the topic "Children's Literature: Fantasy and Beyond". There are many sub topics on which participants from different region presented their paper. The number of participants is 29. There are maximum two individual participant from each university. We (me and my partner Prakruti Bhatt) reached day before and having amazing dinner with the president of association Sanjay Mukherjee sir and Dhvani mam.
7th January
The day begins with delicious breakfast, Thepla, Aalu paratha, Chilly, Tea, Coffee in the lap of nature. Then the inaugural session begins at 10.30. Prof. Kamal Mehta, Head of Department of Saurashtra University introduced the judges and welcomes all the participants with his great speech. The three judges are, Maulik Vyas, Harin Majithia, Mahesh Jivani. All these judges looks at different sides of research paper. Mahesh Jivani has looked on the technical side, means he checked the plagiarism count. Maulik vyas and Harin Majithia saw the overall performance of the participants and gave marks accordingly.
The first participant is Ndayikengurukiye Eliphase from Dravidian University. He has presented on "The Role of Fantasy in Intellectual Development of Children". He gave his argument well and also answered all the questions with apt examples. Overall his presentation is justified to the title of his paper. He is basically from Burundi, Africa, therefore there is some problem of understanding his accent, but still he does his job well. He is too much confident and also recited one beautiful poem at the cultural evening session. Lastly he shared his review of reading paper in the valedictory session.
There are many participants, but only some are eye catching because of their uniqueness like Eliphase.
The other best presenter is Souvik Kar from Presidency University. He delivered his speech with ease. To listen him is just like listening a perfectionist of English Language. He read paper on "Decoding the politics of portraying Totalitarianism and Resistance in Children's fiction". It seems like he has mastered his research work. As we all know that Bengal is rich in education and Souvik is the best example of it who is representing the Bengal's talent. He has also recited amazing poem in the poetic session.
Brijesh Barasara from Shri Govind Guru University, Godhra is another example of talent from small town. He has read paper on "A comparative Study of Film and Novel: The Jungle book". He does his job well of comparing both the film and the novel and also gave satisfactory answers on the questions asked by the audience.
Prakruti Bhatt from our Department of English presented her paper on "Film Adaptations of Children's Literature". Her main focus is on the series of Harry Potter because this is the only film which remains in lots of controversy for its religious and caste based aspects. She has presented well with appropriate arguments. The main thing is error free language, which she kept into consideration and deals with judges like a real English Literature Student. Our Department is obliged to have such student.
Then the evening follows the Talk with author Harin Majithia and Poetry Recitation Programme in which many participants shown their talent of reciting poem, many recited their own creation. At the end Dr. Imran Khan, Dr. Viral Shukla recited beautiful poems, in English, Hindi and Gujarati.
To wait for next day(8 jan) becomes toughest job for me because mine turn was on next day. After listening to these all amazing participants, I feel like I am nothing in front of them. But then I think that why should I bother, I need to do only one thing that is to present myself at the level best. By gaining all the positive thoughts I presented on the next day with full of confidence. Here you can watch my paper reading embedded below.
Actually I have read at my level best. The thing I am lacking is eye contact and also deeper understanding of my topic that is Archetypal characters of Children's Literature. I had taken Five major stories to explain the basic archetype of Children Literature. we can find Hero, Villain, Friendly beast, Wizard in almost all texts. Using archetypal characters all the times not always good. Sometimes children need to think out of the box. There are limitations, like Children feels boring with the same plot structure, they may also feel that everything good is about hero only. In reality Hero also made up of some kind of imperfections. In this way Children's mind remains aloof from the reality. Ndayikengurukiye Eliphase asked one question that what was the impact of using archetypal characters on children's mind. I replied that by seeing some characters with all perfections children started thinking in same way and wants to become like them, which is impossible. In this way the definition of Hero becomes narrow in the mind of children. they have to accept the reality that the society decides what is good or bad. As per the truth behind the mindset of people there is nothing like good or bad. Something which is good for someone, can be bad for someone.
The other presenters who caught my attention are Khushboo Hirani, Preeshita Biswas, Athmika tarun. Khushboo Hirani read her paper on the topic "The depiction of Young Children Struggle in Bond's works. She is a package of confidence, and read her paper by sitting near the judge. She has no fear of anyone, that is the plus point about her. She has also asked questions to judges. Normally judges are asking questions to the participants. But here the case is two way interaction between both. Preeshita Biswas from Presidency University, Kolkata presented on "Through the Prism of Translation: Critique of Childhood in Crayon Shinchan. She has given her argument well with apt points. She has aslo draws our attention to the liking of white skin. As Shinchan craves for white woman who is black himself. This also justifies Fanon's essay Black Skin White Mask. The last but not least is Athmika Tarun from Hyderabad University. He is the only one who has made lots of eye contact. He has not read his paper but delivered his paper. He describes each and every point with apt examples regarding his topic " Reality represented: Violence in ranjit lal's Faces in the water".
The winners are:-
1. Nikita Goel (Sem1) from Central University of Gujarat (Linguistic complexities in Carrol's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the Purpose behind it)
2. Preeshita Biswas (Sem 1) from Presidency University (Through the Prism of Translation: Critique of Childhood in Crayon Shinchan)
3. Naquiyah Vasi (Sem 3) from Mumbai University (One of the greatest storytellers for Children of the 20th Century and Beyond: Roald Dahl)
Winning team-
Preeshita Biswas and Souvik Kar from Presidency University.
Hence these two day of paper reading competition ended well with lots of knowledge. Maulik Vyas talk about the importance of research paper and also described the basic points which must be taken into consideration while writing or presenting any research paper. That is, content, well argument, innovation, error free language (no use of heavy words where simple can fit), expression, judges impression, clarity of concept, rhetorical language, simplicity etc. The technical judge spoke on the technicality of research paper. He said that plagiarism is crime now a days, ccp technique means cut, copy paste will not work any more. the level of originality is raised by the scholars. Harin majithia spoke about the importance of eye contact and to be creative rather than copying someone's else material. She also said that process is important than the end result. These two days become the unforgettable days of my life.
