"Modernist" metaphors in ten short poems: Thinking activity

Thinking Activity

Modern Age

After the Victorian age in literature, there comes 'The Modern age'.  The early decades  of the 20th century, especially the period after World War I, is known as the Modern age. The characteristics of modern age are very much different from victorian age. The decline of agriculture and the growing urbanization of the country were major problems of the day. Modernism involved a radical and conscious break with the past, rejection of conventional Victorian morality and invention of new forms of expression.

Characteristics of Modern Age

i) Avant- garde

It is considered to be the hallmark of modern literature. It refers to position taken by high modernism. Avant Garde artists rejects tradition and undertake to 'make it new'.

ii) Stream of consciousness

It is a method of narration that describes happening in the flow of thoughts in the minds of the characters.

iii)Imagism

It advocated the use of free verse, common speech patterns and clarity of expression through the use of precise visual images as a reaction to Victorian sentimentalism.

iv)Dadaism

It is an artistic and literary movement that emerged as a result of disgust with brutality and barbarism of the world war I

v)Surrealism

It inherited an anti-rational sensibility from Dadaism. It was shaped by Freud's theories of the subconscious. It believed in the superiority of the irrational, the unconscious and the unexpected.

vi)Esoteric

It is the main characteristic of Modern age which means only few learned, scholar can understand, not understand by all.

vii)Skepticism

It is generally any questionong attitude or doubt towards one or more items of putative knowledge or belief. Here it is for those who doubt in religion.

viii)Futurism

It emphasized speed, technology, youth and violence, and objects such as the car, the airplane and industrial city.

ix) The Apocalyptic movement

It is the belief that end of the world is imminent and that a new heaven, new earth will replace the old one.

x) The Aesthetic movement

It supports the emphasis of aesthetic value more than social political theme. It means it focussed more on being beautiful rather than having a deeper meaning.

xi) Absurdity

State of being ridiculous or wildly unreasonable

Modernist symbols, imagery and  metaphors in short poems

1. The Embankment by T.E. Hulme

1. The Embankment by T.E. Hulme

Once, in finesse of fiddles found I ecstasy,
In the flash of gold heels on the hard pavement.
Now see I
That warmth’s the very stuff of poesy.
Oh, God, make small
The old star-eaten blanket of the sky,
That I may fold it round me and in comfort lie.

>This poem is about a fallen man, who falls down and lost his luxurious pleasure. He was sleeping on street, thats why he is asking to God to make small the blanket of sky, He  becomes that much poor that he didn't find blanket to cover his body.

Modern Metaphors:-

i) Imagism- There is common speech pattern and clarity of expression, through the use of precise visual image like:-
"The Old star-eaten blanket of the sky"

ii) Stream of consciousness
In this poem there is flow of thoughts in the mind of the characters, who is thinking about past and present, contarsting situations.

2. Darkness by Joseph Campbell

I stop to watch a star shine
in the boghole-
A star no longer but a silver
ribbon of light.
I look at it and pass on

> This poem is very easy to understand. The speaker is no more interested to see the shining star anymore. For him there is no beauty in star. It becoems as usual, no matter of wonder. In this way the meaninglessness of life is decribed. How a person becomes bore with everyday routine and didn't find anything new in it.

Modern Metaphors

i) Absurdity
In this poem there is hopelessness and meaningless of person. How he became bored and didn't find any change in routine. Now the everyday thing did not gave him any pleasure.

ii) Imagism
The direct apprehension of the subject in this poem marks it as imagist in technique.
"I stop to watch a star shine"

iii) Avant Garde
It means it rejects the tradition of looking at sky for the shining star and make it new by giving metaphor as a silver ribbon.

3. Image by Edward Storer

Forsaken lovers,
burning to a chaste white moon
Upon strange Pyres of loneliness and
draught

Modern metaphor
i)Dadaism
This poem symbolized the characteristics of Dadaism means the poem is the result of  disgust with the brutality of world war I.

"Upon strange Pyres of loneliness and draught"

This line symbolized the effect of world war, loneliness, draught.

4. In a Station of the Metro by Ezra Pound

The apparition of these faces in the
crowd;
Petals on a wet black bough

This shortest poem is highly symbolist. Here we can find the modern metaphor of:-

i)Imagism
"The apparition of these faces in the crowd"

This line shows the  image of the faces in the crowd.

ii) "Petals on a wet black bough"

This line are highly symbolic, the bough symbolize the culture from which all the petals(humans) are connected in such a way that they can't escape from it, even if the tradition becomes darkened, wet, rotten.

5. The Pool by Hilda Doolittle

Are you alive?

I touch you
You quiver trembling like a sea fish
I cover you with my net
What are you- banded one?

i)Esoteric

In this poem the poet tries to give modern metaphors by highlighting the esoteric quality. All lines are simple but still reader finds it difficult to get the deep meaning present inside it. These are meant for only specific people. At outer level of meaning we get that it is something about trapping the fish into net from pool. But in third line when the poet compares the trembling with sea fish,
"You quiver trembling like a sea fish",  then we can get an idea that it is not about catching fish into net but something about sexual perversion. How the girl is trembling in fear and the man tries to cover her with his hand.

6-  Insouciance By Richard Aldington

In and out of the dreary trenches

Trudging cheerily under the stars
I make for myself little poems
Delicate as a flock of doves.
They fly away like white-winged doves

i) Dadaism

In this poem we can find the characteristics of Dadaism, the phrase "dreary trenches" reflects the dreary experience of soldier who walks slowly near border. So here it again comes out as a brutal experience as result of World war.

ii)Aesthetic quality

The phrase "Delicate as a flock of doves" gives aesthetic characteristic to the poem. Flock of doves seems beautiful and it also symbolize the world peace, as they are in white color which always stands for peace.
The phrase "fly away" symbolizes the freedom of soldiers from the brutality of world war.

7. Morning at the Window by T.S. Eliot

They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens,

And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids
Sprouting despondently at area gates

The brown waves of fog toss up to me

Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.

i) Imagism

This poem is highly using images to give reference about the main theme i.e. 'Poverty'.

"rattling breakfast plates", "brown waves of fog", "aimless smile" all these phrases are highly imagist,

which  draws away the picture of poverty that how human beings are suffering, they didn't even find food to eat.

ii)Effect of Industrialization

"Brown waves of fog" reflects the effect of industries, that how it polluted the air and makes its color brown. In this way we can aslo see poem as a result or suffering of labour class after the mechanization of industries.

8. The Red Wheelbarrow by William Carlos Williams

So much depends

upon
a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the white
chickens

i)Imagism

This poem is highly imagist in which the poet used two contrasting  colors signifying various theme. For eg. "The Red Wheelbarrow" the title gives an idea about the color of the wheelbarrow i.e Red which symbolizes power and passion, blood whereas the white Chickens symbolizes the purity, innocence.

ii)Esoteric

It must be an esoteric poem which cannot be understood by all, which is meant for specific class, only those specific people can understand. It carries very deep meaning.

9. Anecdote of the Jar by Wallace Stevens

I placed a jar in Tennessee

And round it was, upon a hill.
It made the slovenly wilderness
Surround that hill.
The wilderness rose up to it,
And sprawled around, no longer wild.
The jar was round upon the ground
And tall and of a port in air
It took dominion everywhere.
The jar was gray and bare.
It did not give of bird or bush,
Like nothing else in Tennessee.

i) Esoteric

This is very confusing poem. It never be understood in first look.It also carries the esoteric quality of the modern age. Why the jar was placed in Tennessee?, which theme it follows?, what the poet wants to convey putting the jar in the Tennessee?.  All these questions raised in our mind while reading poem.

ii) Absurdity

This poem is really absurd as it doesn't follow any specific theme. There is meaninglessness in the poem.

Whether the poet wants to challenge the nature by putting the Jar in Tennesse, or just wants to prove about the power of nature, it cannot be understood. In first phrases teh Jar seems very beautiful and challenged the beauty of nature, but later on the phrase "It did not give of bierd or bush" make it powerless in front of nature that it cannot give birth to any bird or bush, but the mother nature can.

10. I(a- by E.E cummings

l(a... (a leaf falls on loneliness)

i) Surrealism

On the first look the reader can get confuse that whether it is a poem or a joke. Here the poet tried to give surreal effect to his poem, means the unexpected. A leaf falls on loneliness symbolized the fall of civilization, fall of morality.

ii)Existentialism

This can aslo be seen as an exixtentialist poem because a fall also indicates death of loneliness. When a person finds no reason to live and when he/she finds hi/her life meaningless and therefore they wish to commit suicide.

In this way manny Modernist characterictics we can find or can give to these modern poems which reflects the era of modern age.

The Wasteland by T.S Eliot: Thinking activity

Thinking activity

Q1- What are your views on the following image after reading 'The Waste Land'? Do you think that Eliot is regressive as compared to Nietzche's views? or has Eliot achieved universality of thought by recalling ,mytho- historical answer to the contemporary malaise?

>  Yes ,  Eliot is regressive not progressive as compared to Nietzche's views. It is true that there is universality of thoughts in Eliot's poem "The Wasteland" but in a regressive way. We find the same theme surrounded in the poem till the end. Whatever Myths. stories, historical answer Eliot takes, all are supposed to end with a similar theme. i.e. Sexual perversion and Spiritual  decay.

There are so many illustrations from the text of the poem which supports the regressiveness of Eliot's thought. His thought becomes more deeper and deeper and moved in backward direction, rather than forward. There we cannot find solution of anything. The decay and rottenness was surrounded everywhere.

Illustrations:-

"April is the cruellest  month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain" (The burial of the dead)

"What shall I do now? What shall I do?", I shall rush out as I am, and walk the street, "with my hair down, so. What shall we do to-morrow?"(A Game of Chess)
In the above lines, there is regressiveness of thoughts. We can see that Eliot in the first two lines  from the first part of Wasteland "The Burial of the dead" described about the cruelty of April month. Normally poets goes with describing the beauty of april, like in Canterbury tales by Chaucer April is the month of shower. but here things are different. In this way Eliot not only breaking the metaphor but also moveing towards regressive state. To a less developed state.

Again  in the next lines from the second part of the Poem Eliot speaks about the Idea of nothingness. There is no meanings for existence. It draws our attention towards the concept of existentialism which was one of the characteristics of modern age. Its again steps back towards a less developed state.

Even if there are so many myths and stories, Eliot is not able to give the conclusion or the solution for the problem about which he speaks in entire poem. He wants that all human should deal with the idea of morality and should go towards the path of spirituality. But all mankind are going towards spiritual degradation and sexual perversion.

Hence Nietzsche idea of Ubermensch is more progressive and looks forward in dealing with problems of contemporary crisis.

Q2- Gustaf Hellstrom's remark in the following image:-

What are your views regarding these comments? Is it true that giving free vent to the repressed 'primitive instinct' lead us to happy nad satisfied life? Or do you agree with Eliot's view that 'salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural tradition'?

 >As per my views the idea of Freud of primitive instinct is more appropriate than the Eliot's view. For Freud the cause of confusion lies in discomfort and uneasiness in the culture of modern man whereas Eliot speaks about the preservation of the cultural tradition. Freud's view is direct and it clearly speaks about the satisfaction of human needs through satisfying primitive things. For Example- Human beings are always hungry and lustful creature and they like to satisfy their hunger with the process of sexual act.
It is same as Osho's Idea about sex that if you like or desire for sexual pleasure then fulfills it without hesitation. Whatever human like he or she can do to overcome his/her hunger.

Even if human grows older the desire never gets old. This should always remains in conscious or subconcious state and whenever they want they fulfils it.

Hence Freud's Idea is more powerful. Eliot Idea about preservation, self control is not work in the present time. As human grows older he/she may learn to control over his/her feelings but only because of age they are controlling but inside there is same desire as found in the Young generation, but because of inability they couldn't fulfills it.

Eliot speaks about the conscious state that, when  human was doing things consciously he/she can control his/her feelings or anything. But according to Freud there always the presence of subconscious state of mind that make us doing things which we can't imagine or never think of it directly.

Q3-  Allusion to the Indian thoughts in 'The Wasteland'

In the entire poem there are lots of reference which describes the indian though indirectly. Some of them are:-

a) Three Da's
  > Datta
  >Damyata
  > Dayadhvam

These are taken from Indian Brihadaranyaka upanishada. Dattta means the giver (Almighty God), Damyata means self control and Dayadhvam means sympathise. Eliot puts great force in these three Da's that we should follow to atains spirituality.

b) Shantih Shlok

The peace that passes beyond all understanding. We always get peace at the end. Similarly the poem also ends with the hope that one day everything should be redeemed.

c) Holy river Ganga

"Ganga was sunken, and the limp lives, waited for rain, while the black clouds, Gathered far distant, over Himavant....."

Eliot also used the reference of the Mythical Indian Holy river Ganga which was known for its purity.

Q4- Why Eliot refer Indian thoughts?

>There is very important reason of making the use of Indian thoughts in 'Wasteland'. Whenever foreigners think of India, they think of Spiritualistic value rather than materialistic. In a way Indian culture answers to the problems which was faced by the west. Whenever the west is rotten, the great poet of west looks at India to find solution, to attain spirituality. That is the thing which makes Indian people to feel pride.

Indian Idea of Spirituality always attracted the western people who came in India just to get peace which they were not found in any corner of the world. In India there are most of faithful and spiritual people living who with their positive wives affects and attracts the other.

There are so many examples of Spiritual and Philosophical  Gurus in India
-Swami Vivekanad
-Ramkrishna Param hans
-Shri Aurobindo
-Osho Rajneesh
and many more

That is the only reason that why Eliot referred Indian Thoughts. Eliot finds sexual perversion, spiritual decay everywhere and with a hope to get solution he looks on the Indian Idea of spirituality to attain salvation. But he ended his poem with hope, even he is not sure that whether it could be done, achieved or not. Thats why Freaud's concept of ubermensch becomes more powerful beacuse it goes progressively and also oofers solution.

Online discussion: Oneness of Literature

Thinking activity on Oneness of Literature

All literatures are connected with each other. All those works which are already written, those being written and those yet to witten. To understand a work of art, one must have an understanding of this continuity.

Northrop Frye

He developed the theory of Archetypal criticism based on the idea that whole of the literature has oneness of its existence. All literatures shares common DNA or skeleton. There is parallel structure  going on in every piece of writting.

Oneness of Literature with reference to T.S Eliot's Wasteland and Anton Chekhov's A Joke

T.S Eliot covers various topics, myths in his long poem "The Wasteland". Every line of the poem carried very deep meaning inside it. There is some lines which holds the theme of Anton Chekhov's short story "A Joke".
And when we were children, staying at the archduke's,                                                        My cousin's, he took me out on a sled,                                                                                  And I was frightened. He said, Marie,                                                                                  Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.                                                                              In the mountains, there you feel free

Interpretaion

In these lines the girl feels nostalgic about adolescence experience of going in the mountain over the sled. But she gained courage only because of support of her male cousin. Still she trembles when she saw the slope of mountain  from height. All time she need courage and then only she did coasting with cousin.

"A joke" by Anton Chekhov is also shows the same structure of story, only the character name has changed. It is Nadia instead of Marie. In this short story the friend of Nadia performed a joke everyday whenever he id doing coasting with Nadia, in the mid of the jorney he used to utter four magical words "I Love You Nadia" in very silent mode. Nadia all time becomes confuse that whether it is true or just an illusion. To listen these words she gained courage to to do coasting again and again. Every time he utters these words. One day Nadia decided to do coasting alone, just to make sure that who is speaking. But she didn't listens anything because she was too much frightened that day because her friend was not with her to give her courage.

Theme of Sexual Perversion

In the story as well as in the lines of Wasteland there is deep meaning inside it. The act of coasting is not just for fun or for other things. It indicates the first lustful act, first attraction. How the first relation made deep effect in one's life. In the end of the story there is a line:-

"That memory is for her the happiest, the most touching, the most beautiful one of her life. But for me, now that I have grown older, I can no longer understand why I said those words and why I jested with Nadia"

These lines indicates that all the things which  he has done with Nadia is just a kind of lustful act. And after it both went to their different paths in life. The girl married and boy went to Pitsburg. The main thing for human is to achieve the sexual pleasure and in this way the land turns into the 'Wasteland' with full of waste people. It was not the matter of past, but of present also and will remain forever, there is oneness of the concept which we found in both these works( The wasteland, A Joke)

Hollowness

The four words are meant a lot for the girl. Here we can see the importance of outer things than inner. Only the physical pleasure, butter polished words are remain at the centre. There is hollowness in every human being, no true and pure relation survive in the present time.

Esoteric characteristics

The lines seems easy, as we can understand each and every words, but we are not able to find its deep meaning because of its esoteric quality which is for specific people only, who can understand the concept which was present inside the text.

From Feminist point of view

If we looked at these lines of poem from feminist point of view, we find that a girl was shown as weaker than man, both physically and mentally. Here the man gives her courage and his words are also act as a booster. Without his support Marie or Nadia can do nothing.

Translation

The story of Anton Chekhov's  A Joke was translated in Gujrati for one of the column of Gujrat Samachar. But we cannot find a proper Gujrati word for Sled. The Gujrati writer has used the same english word.
Even in the tilte we can notice the big change in translation. The real tile in English is 'A Joke', but in Gujrati it becomes 'small joke' (nanakdi mjak). In this way the translation was not done well. There are many words which cannot be translated because sometimes it loses its essence.

"Matilda" movie review: Thinking activity

Thinking Task on "Matilda"

"Matilda" a movie review

On 6 July we have seen the movie "Matilda" at our Department. The title is based on the protagonist  "Matilda". She is very intelligent girl and fond of reading new books. She has started reading books from very young age and started upgrading her mind. Her parents are not supportive and she always left alone in her family. In spare time she used to cook food also. She is very creative and have knowledge of every field.

Desire for book

Matilda first ask to her father for reading books but was totally ignored by him and then she has decided to issue book herself from the library. In the film Books gave her reason to live and without books Matilda finds herself incomplete.

Patriarchal family

The family of Matilda is patriarchal as her parents used to give more importance to her brother and fulfills all the wishes. Whereas the Position of Matilda is inferior.

Realisation of power

There is something different in Matilda which was not usually found in every kid of her age. She has power in her eyes from which she can move or break any object. It is called Telekinetic power. Matilda realised her power when she was forcefully watching the "Stickey with Mickey show" because her father didn't allowed her to read book at the family gathering time. She was very much angry and looks on the TV screen angrily. Then suddenly the screen broke down. That time she realised that there is something mysterious inside her.

Her Favorite book: Moby Dick

In the film mostly Matilda was shown with the book Moby Dick. In biginning and in the last scene she was holding this book which was written  by Herman Melville.

School experience

Matilda was always exited to join school. When finally her dad allowed her and got her admission ahe became so much happy.

Strict Headmistress: Miss Trunchbull

Matilda faced perilious experince on the very first day of her school. The headmistress was very strict. However in last Matilda taught her good lesson with the help of her power. She take revenge on the behalf of the plight of all school children including her teacher also Miss honey.  Later on it was discover that Miss Trunchbull was the aunt of Miss Honey. Matilda also helps to bring the house of Miss Honey back from the clinker of Miss Trunchbull.
Miss Trunchbull also speaks one line in the film which shows her domination power-
i) "My Idea of perfect school is there are no childrens at all"
ii) "I am big you are small, I am right you are wrong"

Archetypal structure in the film

Usually the antagonist found with some weard look. In this film also we found common archetypal look of Miss trunchbull, a big fat ugly lady with lots of physical power. But as in the end good wins and evil lost according to most of the endings of the films, even if the good is weaker than the evil.
There is one superstition found  in the film when Miss Trunchbull didnot wants a black cat to cross her route, because it was considered as bad omen.

My favorite book

"Ludhakta Patthar" by Pratap singh Tarun

Ludhakta Patthar is my favorite novel story which i have read thrice, firstly when I was in 11th class, second while doing graduation, third at the time of vacations during post graduate level (part I). This novel is really very much inspiring for me. I had learned many life lessons and reality about human nature through this.

There is  male protaginist in the novel whose name is Roshu. The entire story was surrounded by him. His character is same as the title suggest wandering here and there just like fallen stone. He has faced many difficulties in life but still he survive because of his self trust. He faced ups and downs in life but never give up. He learns to survive in every circumstances. Sometimes he becomes very poor but manage to earn for his basic needs. He believes in hard work, without work he never accept any kind of help or money from any people. In this novel there are many characters who tries to help him but he always wish to overcome the troubles as himself. He remains loyal throughout the novel.

There is one best line written in the beginning of the story:-
एक मित्र को
जिसने जमाने को सर्वस्व दिया
 और जमाने से मिली उसे नफरत I
In this way the characteristics of the protagonist inspired me a lot and i have learnt the basic moral lessons, specially the one "Humanity is above all the charity."

Blood Donation Camp

Spare only 15 minutes and save one life.

What is the matter of fear? Why are you in worry? If you are fit and healthy then why don't you donate blood.
There are many people who fears in donating blood. But there is nothing to worry about. If you are taking healthy diet and are not totally relying on fast food then you can saves one life.

13 July 2018

Department of english organised blood donation camp and the idea was given by our Daily Schedule Committee leaders Kavitaba Gohil and Mayuri Soalnki. It was really amazing social act. Total 21 students have given their precious blood. It really needs courage to do such vise act of humanity. Many of them had given blood for the first time.

Many girls are willing but not able to give blood because of their less Haemoglobin level their running menstrual cycle. Mostly girls are facing these problems now a days because of their dependence on fast food. Even boys also are heavily relying on fast food which was dangerous for health. One needs to eat green vegetables to increase the percentage of blood drastically.
Before and after of giving blood one needs to take food. And have to drink plenty of water. For some time we may feel weak if we are not mentaly prepared. But after that new energy boost up our mind and will started feeling proud on oneself.

All the 21 blood donars are very much excited for giving blood. Our Prefessor Dilip Barad  with Himal Pandya sir has arrange one big van in which all has given their blood. So that it didnt need any type of labour to arrange the long seats for blood donars.

Overall the session was successful.  At last as per the tradition of our department we take group photo of all the donars.

NET Exam experience for the first time

Hello guys,
I am going to share my experience of appearing in NET exam for the first time. It is not same as all the ordinary exams, it is much harder than all the other exams. One need to merge day and night to prepared herself fully. Ya I am not able to do this. But In my vacations I have read Two books in just one look without making any notes. The first is Arihant Publication and the second book is for Paper One by Trueman. I have ordered both these books online.

On 8th July 2018, I have given the NET exam. Let me share you first from the beginning of my journey. I reached Ahmedabad with my Dad at & july. Then on next morning We take rikshaw from Odhav to DAV International school, Makarba. It takes 45 minutes(24 km). I have read in hallticket that candidates shall be present by 7 am. So me and my daddy reached there before 7. There written that entries are allowed from 7 onwards. Yes, we reached too early.

Then I faced strickest checking ever. They even didnt allow nose ring, hairband, hairpin, earings, shoe-slipper. We go inside the school by putting all these things outside. Then me and my friend Rudrika sit there for 1 and half hour. At 9 O' clock we entered in class. At 9.30 the toughest journey begins. The paper one is normally about teaching aptitudes, general awareness with some mathematical questions etc. It contains 50 questions. I find it lengthy because it needs time to think. Without proper practice  we cannot  finish it on time. At the last 15 minutes I started marking the remaining questions in hurry without reading it properly. Finally I have finished it on time.

Then from 10.30 to 11 we have break, but not allowed to leave the classroom. So I just seated there and counting the minute hand of clock. At 11 another surprise is ready, the toughest NET paper for English, conatining 100 questions of 2 marks for each. With the begining of very first questions I smiled because I have never heard of it and then this process of  giving shock bigins, with every new questions I feel like I am much stranger and started doubting myself as a literary student. Alas I have found Four to Five questions of my M.A Syllabus, relating to 'HAMLET', GULLIVER'S TRAVELS and some other.

At the end I have realised that hardly only two questions are comes from Arihant. Now I decided to do not look back and should start reading the history By Albert. Overall it was amazing and shocking experience. But is obvious because exam at national level never be so easy. It required fully focused and hard working mind to crack the record.
