Topic: Total Physical Response

Introduction

Language teaching methods have cast light on the language teaching theory and practice. Some methods are still in controversy regarding their usefulness. However it never devalued its effectiveness. Language teaching has a long fascinating but rather tortuous history. Many different methods are:-

i)                   The Direct Method
ii)                The Grammar Translation method
iii)              Audio Lingual Method
iv)              The structural method
v)                Suggestopedia method
vi)              Total physical response
vii)           Communicative language teaching method

Each of the different methods has contributed new elements and has attempted to deal with some issues of language learning all these method caries different social and educational needs. A teacher who is going to apply any of these methods, then he/she has to consider several questions in their mind that who the learners are?, to whom they are going to teach?, what is their level of language?, and many more (Dong-ling)

Total Physical Response

Total Physical response is one of the most simplest and active method of language teaching. It is developed by James Asher, a professor emeritus of psychology. There is coordination of language and Physical movement. Instructors used target language to give commands to students with body movements, similarly students respond with full body movements. In this method the learner responds to simple commands such as, “Sit down”, “Stand up”, “Head Down” etc. The method stresses the importance over hearing comprehension. It is very much useful in infants learning. Infants have not started to speak their mother tongue from birth. They first observe their surroundings, the way people used to communicate; they saw various movements from people. There is only hearing, watching and learning process. They speak with their caretakers silently with hand movements, various gestures, even their facial expressions shows various emotions.
There is total physical action in infant during learning new surroundings (Sperling). Like, smile for grandmother, pick up your toy and out it on your bed.  These all can be taken as language body conversation.

Students come to life

By Language body conversation, students come to life. It is not only about children, but adults, old aged everyone come to life. They get excited because they understanding everything. What the instructor is saying, everything, every command got clear in mind through physical movements. There is one sentence that:-

“If you can’t convince students in five minutes that they can learn any language, you will not convince them even if they stay in your class for a year”

That is very significant in context of language learning through Total Physical response method. Therefore it is most powerful tool in linguistic tool box.

Stress Free Tool

An important condition for successful language learning is the absence of stress. First language acquisition takes place in stress free environment. Total Physical Response prepared students for a successful transition to speaking, reading and writing. This is a stress free tool in which there is no need to remember any phrase or text. It known in worldwide as TPR and has stood over the time in thousands of language with success. The key to stress-free learning is to tap into the natural bio-program for language development and thus to recapture the relaxed and pleasurable experiences that accompany first language learning. By focusing on meaning interpreted through movement, rather than on language forms, the learner is said to be liberated from self-conscious and stressful situations and is able to devote full energy to learning.

Role of learner and Teacher

Learners have primary roles of listening and performing. They listen attentively and respond physically to commands given by the teacher. Learners are required to respond both individually and collectively. Learners have little influence over the content of learning, since content is determined by the teacher.
Teacher plays an active and direct role in Total Physical Response. He is the director of the stage and learners are the actor. Teacher decides
What to teach, who models and presents the new material for classroom use.

Internalizing Language

With total physical response students can internalize any language as easy, fast as they can. With this method students can get great success in short span of time without getting bore.

Comprehension Approach

This method is an example of the comprehension approach to language teaching. There are two purposes of listening and responding:-

i)                   Quickly recognizing meaning in the language.
ii)                Means of passively learning the structure of the language itself.

Vocabulary

Total Physical response method helps a lot in learning vocabulary especially idiomatic terms (wikipedia contributors). Asher saw the conversation between parents and children; he has noticed that form of speech delivered by parents followed by a physical response from the child.

Three Hypotheses based on this observation:-

i)                   Language is learned primarily by listening
ii)                Language learning must engage the right hemisphere of the brain
iii)              Learning language should not involve any stress

Total Physical response is most popular among the beginners who have just begins to learn new language. It was not restricted to any specific group or age.

James Asher

Asher hypothesizes that speech develops naturally and spontaneously after learners internalize the target language through input. And that it should not be forced.

“A reasonable hypothesis is that the brain and the nervous system are biologically programmed to acquire language, either the first or the second in a particular sequence and in a particular mode. The sequence is listening before speaking and the mode is to synchronize language with the individual’s body”.
-                                                                                                   -Asher

No force

In total physical response students are not forced to speak as it do not requires spoken output. Teacher will wait until the students will acquired enough language. The ultimate goal of this method is to develop oral fluency. It is the most efficient way of developing spoken language skills.

Primary focus on meaning

This very method differentiates with Grammar translation by putting its main aim to meaning rather than grammar, verb. In this method Grammar is not explicitly taught, but is learned by induction.

Codebreaking

Students in this method are subconsciously acquire the grammatical structure of the language through exposure to spoken language input, in addition to decoding the messages in input to find their meaning. Therefore this approach to listening is called “codebreaking”.

Philosophy of language teaching

It is a teaching technique in which teachers do not have to limit themselves because the students are only expected to listen and not to speak. Teacher can decide that what inputs a student can hear.
Asher suggests that students can learn between 12-36 words for every hour of instruction, depending on their language level and class size.

Trace theory

Total Physical Response linked to “Trace theory” of memory in psychology. It holds the more often or the more intensively a memory connection, the stronger the memory association will be and the more likely it will be recalled.

Skillful use of the imperative

Asher does not directly discuss the nature of language. However, the labeling and ordering of Total physical Response classroom drills seem to be built on assumption that owe much to structuralist or grammar-based views of language. Asher claims that “most of the grammatical structure of the target language and hundreds of vocabulary items can be learned from the skillful use of the imperative by the instructor” (vobs contributors).

Right Brain Learning

Asher sees Total Physical Response as directed to right-brain learning, whereas most second language teaching methods are directed to left-brain learning. Asher refers to neurological studies of the brains of cats and studies of an epileptic boy whose corpus callosum was surgically divided. Asher interprets these as demonstrating that the brain is divided into hemispheres according to function, with language activities centralized in the right hemisphere.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Total Physical Response

Advantages

     i) Mind refreshing activity
     ii)  Learning with fun
iii) Can be used in both large and small classes
iv) No need of lots of preparation
     v) Assist students to recognize phrases or words

 Disadvantages

     i)  Some students might find it embarrassing who are not used to it.
ii)  Only suitable for beginner levels.
iii) Not flexibly used to teach everything
iv) It needs much energy so that learners not feel tired
     v) It can be effective if a teacher used it for long period of time (Widodo)

Conclusion

Therefore in total physical method, teachers are responsible for giving commands and monitoring actions taken by the learners. On the contrary, the learners are imitators of teacher’s verbal and non-verbal models. The interaction between a teacher and learners is signified by the teacher speaking and the learner responding nonverbally. Later on, the learners become more verbal and the teacher responds nonverbally.

Topic: The term Diaspora and its significance with reference to the essay “Imaginary Homeland”

Introduction

The term Diaspora mostly refers to the dispersion of Jews beyond Israel. In broad meaning it can be taken as the dispersion or spread of any people from their original homeland.
This is very much significant term, especially in postcolonial era. Number of people after Independence migrated from one place to other, some are willingly, and some are unwillingly. This is long term process. There are so many reasons behind the dispersion of huge masses, far away from their native land to an unknown land.

Diaspora

The number of people migrated from one place to another is always keep on changing. It is more in postcolonial era, and lesser in this modern era. Sometimes it becomes vice-versa due to some economic reasons.
Diaspora is refers to the scattered population whose origin is somewhere else. It is involuntary mass dispersions. Historically it is taken from the expulsion of Jews from Israel (wikipedia contributors)

Jewish Diaspora

The dispersion of Jews from Israel is also mention in the Hebrew Bible. There is one word exile which means the fate of israelites who were taken into exile from the kingdom of Israel and the Judahits from the kingdom of Judah. While in exile “Judahits” becomes “Jews”

A Jewish Diaspora existed for several centuries. Before the middle of the first century CE in addition to Judea, Syria and Babylonia, large Jewish communities existed in Roman province of Egypt, Cyrene and Crete and in Rome itself. The Judean population revolted against the Roman Empire in 66CE (wikipedia contributors).

Finally in the twelfth century the Jews settled in a country they could call it as their own. Jews used a worst possible judgment and selected a strip of land that was a corridor for the armies warring empires. The Jews were have to pay for their error judgment by being decimated in battle, sold into slavery or deported to alien lands. Yet they showed up persistently at the same old place, building a new their little strip of real estate which has been alternatively called Canaan, Palestine, Israel.

Palestinian Diaspora

Palestinian Diaspora has a long history of migration. The first large emigration wave of Arab Christians out of Palestine began in the mid 19th century as a response to the oppression of Palestinian Christians in Ottoman Palestine (wikipedia contributors). During the war of Arab with Israeli(1948), Palestinian has experienced exile and migrated to different host countries around the world. More than 70,000 refugees become homeless. They lost their “Homeland” and are living in “Hostland”. Many migrated in search of job, education, better living. But many more, for example an average of 21,000 Palestinians per year were forced out of Israeli-controlled areas.

Idea of Imaginary Homeland

“Imaginary Homeland” is a collection of essays written by Salman Rushdie, one of the Diaspora writers. This book covers a wide variety of topics, Imaginary Homeland is one of them. All the essays under it are based on Salman Rushdie’s real life experience and his contemporary time scenario. Rushdie throughout his works focuses upon the curious position of migrant or the exile. Salman believes that the act of migration is one that profoundly changes the individuals, transforming the relationship of the migrant with both his/her home country and new host country. Some issues like “home” and “belonging” are very crucial issues, Migrants believes that their Idea of home becomes detached from their home country. A migrant always suffers a lot. There is one quote in the essay which reflects the condition of migrants.

“…It is the fate of migrants to be stripped of history, to stand naked amidst the scorn of strangers upon whom they see rich clothing, the brocades of continuity and the eyebrows of belonging”.
Migrants are able to combine both their home culture and host culture in their life, which enables them to explore their Diaspora identity (Access teacher).

Homeland and Hostland

It is important to know the Diasporization process to understand the unfolding of immigration, and Dediasporization which shapes both homeland and hostland. Dediasporization can occur in both the sending and the receiving countries. It is defined as the regrouping of dispersed people, when a community returned to its place of origin. This equates the physical relocation to the homeland. It is also the process by which a diasporic subject either reacquires homeland citizenship by returning to the sending country, effects generational assimilation in the host state or reinscribes himself or herself in the transnational circuit of transnation state (Laguerre)

Therefore there are three distinct locales, where dediasporization can be affected:-
i)                   The homeland
ii)                The hostland
iii)              The translocal arena

African Trans-Atlantic slave trade

It is very inhuman example of Diaspora which involved the transportation by slave traders of enslaved African people, mainly to Americas (wikipedia contributors). Mostly only Africans are transported from central and western Africa who had been sold to other Western Europeans. Portuguese are the beginner  who engaged in Atlantic slave trade. The first Africans imported to the English colonies were classified as  “indentured servants” and also as “apprentices for life”. In the 17th century slavery was a legal right. Slaves and their offspring becomes the legal property of their owners and children who born to slave mother are also considered as slave and were sold at markets with other goods and services.

Major slave trading nations:-
i)                   Portuguese
ii)                British
iii)              French
iv)              Spanish
v)                Dutch

Current estimates are that about 12 million Africans were shipped across the Atlantic, and more are purchased by the traders.

These all slaves are also human beings, they also wants to live in their homeland. They don’t want to migrate but left with no choices. They have to live in unknown land, serving unknown people, because they are poor, they are black. There is always a question of Racism in transporting black Africans to the country of white people where they are humiliated, insulted, because of their skin color, there poor condition. They become the object of fun for white people. They missed their native land, they wants to return back to their homeland, but they can’t. This is the situation of slave, condition of slave in the past time. In present there were many laws made to ban these all illegal acts and the number of slaves is lesser and lesser than the ancient time.

Italian Diaspora

It is the large scale of emigration of Italian from Italy.

Major Italian Diasporas

i)                   Around 1880 to 1940s( Began after the Unification of Italy and ended with the rise of Fascism in Italy)

ii)                Started after the end of world war II to 1970s

These both major Diaspora in Italy consist together largest voluntary emigration period in history (wikipedia contributors). Around 13,000,000 left Italy in between 1880-1976. They migrated because of social and economic problems. They are facing financial crisis in their country. Youth are remained unemployed. Therefore they face the need of Diaspora.

There are three different waves of Italian Diaspora:-

i)                   The first wave occurred between the unification of Italy in 1861 and 1900.
ii)                The second wave occurred between 1900-40 during the beginning of world war I
iii)              The third wave occurred following World War II along with Europeans.

Reasons behind Migration:-

i)                   Financial crisis
ii)                Poverty
iii)              Unemployment
iv)              Lack of land
v)                Political problem
vi)              Economical problem
vii)           Organized crime
viii)         Overpopulation of southern Italy

Norman Conquest of England

During Norman Conquest of England so many Anglo-Saxon warriors and their families immigrated to different places. Norman Conquest of England was the 11th century invasion of England by and army of Norman, Breton, Flemish, and French soldiers led by Duke William II of Normandy. Anglo-Saxons were a people who inhabited Great Britain from the 5th century. They comprise people from Germanic tribes who migrated to the island from continental Europe.

Conclusion

Therefore in all cases, the term Diaspora carries a sense of displacement.  The populations are separated from their national territory. People who are migrated have a hope to return back to their homeland at some point. There is nostalgic feeling in them with the loss of their native land. On the other hand individuals have multiple homes throughout their Diaspora, with different reasons for maintaining some form of attachment to each.

Role of Fate in the life of characters with reference to “Mourning  Becomes Electra”

Topic: Role of fate in the life of characters with reference to “Mourning becomes Electra

Introduction

Fate plays a vital role in the life of characters. It is responsible in making the life tragic or comic. It brings downfall or also brings success. Therefore in any success or failure story, there is great role of fate. From very ancient time the writers have written several major texts in which fate of the protagonist plays vital role and change the life totally. Some texts are “Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles, “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald and many more.
Mourning becomes Electra is also significant text in study of fate in the life of characters.

Mourning becomes Electra

Mourning becomes Electra by Eugene O’ Neill is a retelling of the Oresteia by Aeschylus. The characters are the parrallel characters from the ancient Greek play. Character of Ezra Mannon is taken from the Greek play character Agamemnon, similarly Christine’s character is taken from Clytemnestra, Orin from Orestes, Lavinia from Electra, Adam Brant from Aegisthus (Wikipedia contributors). Therefore this triology is based on Greek Tragedy with all its kings and curses.

Role of Fate: A challenge for Eugene O’Neill

It was a challenge for Eugene O’Neill to bring fate into such a play, which an intelligent audience of today, possessed of no belief in Gods and supernatural retribution. So he had discovered a modern equivalent for the Greek idea of fate. All the characters of “Mourning becomes Electra” are wind up to dead. Fate plays here the great role in the death of the characters. Fate stalks the Mannons and shoves them along towards their inevitable end. According to the belief of Greeks Fate determines our lives, they also have one Goddess “Tyche” who controlled the fortunes of men (shmoop editorial team)

Greek Goddess Tyche

Tyche meaning luck, in Classical Greek Mythology, she is the daughter of Aphrodite and Zeus. The Greek historian Polybius believed that when no one cause can be discovered to events such as floods, drought, frosts, and then the cause of these events may be fairly attributed to Tyche (Wikipedia contributors).

Role of fate in the life of Ezra Mannon

Ezra Mannon is a self made man. The play portrays his character in a positive way as it never shows his negative side. In the very beginning of the play there is one line which welcomes Ezra, “This town’s real proud of Ezra”. All have good opinion for him but none of them have good opinion for his wife Christine. The trouble in the life of Ezra begins with his wife Christine; she is responsible to change the fate of Ezra from success to downfall, from life to death. Through the character of Christine Eugene shows the bad luck of Ezra.

Ezra is on the front and is expected to return to the town soon and he does return earlier than expected but merely to meet his death. At first his wife fools him about Adam Brant’s relationship with their daughter  Lavinia. Later during night Ezra blames her of lying to him about love since their wedding night. The quarrel begins and it goes on till she finally declares that she has been in love with Adam Brant. Ezra Mannon got struck by hearing this and meets his heart attack. He needs medicine instantly. But

Christine gave him poison instead of medicine. He has trust in Christine that’s why taking the poison by thinking it as medicine to cure his heart ache. But when suddenly the poison started spreading in his body he realized the cunningness of his wife, but now it’s too late to realize. He wants’ help but there is no one. Before his final breath Lavinia heard some kind of voices and immediately came to the room of Ezra Mannon, finding him taking his last breath. Ezra pointed out to Christine for the reason of his death and therefore Lavinia got the message and then plans to take revenge from her own mother (Rise notes contributors)
In this Ezra destined to meet his tragic doom through the character of Christine.

Role of fate in the life of Christine

Here in the character of Christine, Lavinia plays a vital role in changing the fate of her. Lavinia is the only daughter of Christine but responsible for the death of Christine. She has not giving any physical torture to her mother, but gives a lot of mental torture.

Christine is responsible for the Oedipus complex of her child Orin. Christine is not happy with her husband Ezra Mannon. She dislikes him, that’s why having an extra-marital affair with Adam Brant. There is one line which shows the hatred of Christine over Ezra Mannon.

“You want the truth? You’ve guessed it! You’ve used me, you’ve given me children but I have never once been yours!”

Christine hates Lavinia, because Lavinia is the sign of her and Ezra relationship. She didn’t want any type of memory of Ezra. She differentiated between Orin and Lavinia. She cares too much for Orin, and wants him to settle down and marry his cousin Hazel. She always remains unfaithful to her husband and poisoned him when he returns from war.

Later on in the story we feel like she was in deep love with her son Orin and wanted to settle down with him. But unfortunately Lavinia as her bad luck always shatters downs her plans. She along with her brother Orin murdered the lover of her mother that is Adam Brant. Therefore when Lavinia left no choice for Christine to survive, then she commit suicide.
In this way Lavinia is responsible to make her mother’s life tragic. Fate plays vital role, if Christine got caring daughter then the case will be different (Rise notes contributors)

Role of Fate in the life of Orin

There is another tragic story of Orin Mannon, son of Ezra and Christine. In his story Lavinia has work as a bad luck that is responsible to make Orin alone and at last Orin also commit suicide like his mother. He loves Christine a lot. There is Oedipus complex in between Mother and son relationship. For her mother he ignores Hazel whom he supposed to marry. He has been never in love with Hazel. He took interest in Hazel just to create jealousy in her mother.

“That was only to make you jealous!(then bitterly) But now you are a widow, I’m Not home an hour before you’re trying to marry me off! You must be damned anxious to get rid of me again! Why?”

Orin is the only male heir of Mannon family but his death brings the fall of the family. Lavinia never leaves any chance to convince her brother against Christine. She makes her all efforts and was succeeding also in the end because as per the plan of Lavinia Orin murdered Adam Brant, the lover of Christine. Then Christine commit suicide, finds herself all alone, without Adam, without Orin. After the death of mother Lavinia was left with Orin. Then Orin has been taking fullest interest in her because she resembles her mother. He even proposes her to stay with him and ignore Peter, but Lavinia can’t. As a result Orin feels defeated and missed badly his mother. Therefore he decided to choose the same path as his mother has chosen, suicide, the only way to get rid of his life (Rise notes contributors)

Conclusion

In this way fate plays a vital role in the life of the three main characters of “Mourning becomes Electra”. They are destined to meet their tragic doom in one or another way. Therefore Eugene O’ Neill reveals the tragic psychological fate in the play by making his characters appear on the stage all with the same “life-like mask, a mask used to hide and pretend their true inner selves (Yijin).
