"Matilda" movie review: Thinking activity

Thinking Task on "Matilda"

"Matilda" a movie review

On 6 July we have seen the movie "Matilda" at our Department. The title is based on the protagonist  "Matilda". She is very intelligent girl and fond of reading new books. She has started reading books from very young age and started upgrading her mind. Her parents are not supportive and she always left alone in her family. In spare time she used to cook food also. She is very creative and have knowledge of every field.

Desire for book

Matilda first ask to her father for reading books but was totally ignored by him and then she has decided to issue book herself from the library. In the film Books gave her reason to live and without books Matilda finds herself incomplete.

Patriarchal family

The family of Matilda is patriarchal as her parents used to give more importance to her brother and fulfills all the wishes. Whereas the Position of Matilda is inferior.

Realisation of power

There is something different in Matilda which was not usually found in every kid of her age. She has power in her eyes from which she can move or break any object. It is called Telekinetic power. Matilda realised her power when she was forcefully watching the "Stickey with Mickey show" because her father didn't allowed her to read book at the family gathering time. She was very much angry and looks on the TV screen angrily. Then suddenly the screen broke down. That time she realised that there is something mysterious inside her.

Her Favorite book: Moby Dick

In the film mostly Matilda was shown with the book Moby Dick. In biginning and in the last scene she was holding this book which was written  by Herman Melville.

School experience

Matilda was always exited to join school. When finally her dad allowed her and got her admission ahe became so much happy.

Strict Headmistress: Miss Trunchbull

Matilda faced perilious experince on the very first day of her school. The headmistress was very strict. However in last Matilda taught her good lesson with the help of her power. She take revenge on the behalf of the plight of all school children including her teacher also Miss honey.  Later on it was discover that Miss Trunchbull was the aunt of Miss Honey. Matilda also helps to bring the house of Miss Honey back from the clinker of Miss Trunchbull.
Miss Trunchbull also speaks one line in the film which shows her domination power-
i) "My Idea of perfect school is there are no childrens at all"
ii) "I am big you are small, I am right you are wrong"

Archetypal structure in the film

Usually the antagonist found with some weard look. In this film also we found common archetypal look of Miss trunchbull, a big fat ugly lady with lots of physical power. But as in the end good wins and evil lost according to most of the endings of the films, even if the good is weaker than the evil.
There is one superstition found  in the film when Miss Trunchbull didnot wants a black cat to cross her route, because it was considered as bad omen.

My favorite book

"Ludhakta Patthar" by Pratap singh Tarun

Ludhakta Patthar is my favorite novel story which i have read thrice, firstly when I was in 11th class, second while doing graduation, third at the time of vacations during post graduate level (part I). This novel is really very much inspiring for me. I had learned many life lessons and reality about human nature through this.

There is  male protaginist in the novel whose name is Roshu. The entire story was surrounded by him. His character is same as the title suggest wandering here and there just like fallen stone. He has faced many difficulties in life but still he survive because of his self trust. He faced ups and downs in life but never give up. He learns to survive in every circumstances. Sometimes he becomes very poor but manage to earn for his basic needs. He believes in hard work, without work he never accept any kind of help or money from any people. In this novel there are many characters who tries to help him but he always wish to overcome the troubles as himself. He remains loyal throughout the novel.

There is one best line written in the beginning of the story:-
एक मित्र को
जिसने जमाने को सर्वस्व दिया
 और जमाने से मिली उसे नफरत I
In this way the characteristics of the protagonist inspired me a lot and i have learnt the basic moral lessons, specially the one "Humanity is above all the charity."
