Live Burial

 Live Burial by Wole Soyinka

Q- Explain the Poem "Live Burial" in detail

OR

Give Critical analysis of the Poem "Live Burial"

Answer-

Wole Soyinka

Wole Soyinka was born on 13 July 1934 at Abeokuta, near Ibadan in western Nigeria. During the civil war in Nigeria, Soyinka appealed in an article for cease-fire. For this he was arrested in 1967, accused of conspiring and was held as a political prisoner for 22 months until 1969. Soyinka has published about 20 works: drama, novels and poetry. He writes in English and his literary language is marked by great scope and richness of words.

Wole Soyinka is best known as a playwright. Alongside his literary career, he has also worked as an actor and in theaters in Nigeria and Great Britain. His works also include poetry, novels, and essays. Soyinka writes in English, but his works are rooted in his native Nigeria and the Yoruba culture, with its legends, tales, and traditions. His writing also includes influences from Western traditions - from classical tragedies to modernist drama.

Analysis of "Live Burial"

Live Burial is a poem about the life of a prisoner and the treatment they are receiving inside the Prison Cell. They are being tortured till death for the crime which they have never committed.  There is an autobiographical element from the life of Wole Soyinka. We found similarity of his experiences, the torture that he had received while being captured in Prison. He spent 22 months inside the jail for an accusation of conspiracy that he never did. The title "Live Burial" functions as a summary of what the Nigerian government tried to impose on Soyinka's mind. the focused image of live burial, is about a specific response from the depths of human nightmares. The thought of being buried while still living also necessarily creates the fear of premature death.

Wole Soyinka is explaining the movement of the Prisoner. He is walking with long, decisive steps in a specified direction. The focus on Soyinka's footsteps emphasizes the severe limitations that the walls place on his freedom, and the acknowledgement of pacing, especially with such exact numbers, reveals the poet's restless energy seeking any outlet possible. The one who is in authority had  captured humanity and truth. They are drilling or making hole in the mind of people. They forced them to be insane by all the inhuman punishments. Wole Syinka has used mythical concept of Antigone. She was  the subject of a story in which she attempts to secure a respectable burial for her brother Polynices. The two sons of Oedipus, Eteocles and Polynices, had shared rule jointly until they quarreled, and Eteocles expelled his brother.  Eteocles decided not to share power with his brother after his tenure expired. Polynices left the kingdom, gathered an army and attacked the city of Thebes in the war of the Seven against Thebes. Both brothers were killed in the battle.

King Creon, who has ascended to the throne of Thebes after the death of the brothers, decided that Polynices is not to be buried or even mourned, on pain of death by stoning. Antigone, Polynices' sister, go against the king's order and is caught.

Antigone is brought before Creon, and admits that she knew of Creon's law forbidding mourning for Polynices but chose to break it, claiming the superiority of divine over human law, and she speaks against Creon's cruelty with courage, passion, and determination. Creon orders Antigone buried alive in a tomb. Although Creon has a change of heart and tries to release Antigone. But he was already too late. When he visited the Prison,  he finds she has hanged herself. After that Creon's son Haemon, who was in love with Antigone, commits suicide with a knife, and his mother Queen Eurydice also kills herself in despair over her son's death.

In this way Wole Soyinka has compared the innocence of the prisoner by the lover of Antigone who has committed suicide because of difference of opinion from his father. Wole Soyinka is trying to say that people were  unearthing the dead bodies which were already lying in peace. They are digging deep and again torturing them for the deeds that they have never committed.

The one who is in power, the outsiders who had captured the African Land were sealing the bodies alive in the cemetery. It means they are torturing natives beyond limit. There is also the mention of the mysterious river 'Styx' which is a very dark river of underworld. The water is poisonous which caused the death of Alexander. The reason to add this instance was to talk about the mysteries which were never getting solved. Such as, the cases for which the power positioned people were arresting the innocent people and no one can find out the truth behind it.

Social media playing a vital role in covering the deeds of the cruel people by accusing the innocence. The news on the Bulletin speaks about the good things only. Even if the reality is totally different. The corrupted people will cover the death mystery of the prisoners by stating "They eat well, they sleep well." Even the doctors are supporting them by writing wrong reports. By doing all such things they are keeping their good public image. They are telling lies in this Post-Truth Era which are easily digested by the public.

Wole Soyinka has also taken the  reference of "Galileo" who was an Italian Physicist, Mathematician, Engineer, Astronomer and Philosopher. There was a major role of Galileo in scientific revolution. He has redefined the reality in the world of Science and Mathematics and went against the common belief of the church. Both Soyinka and Galileo challenged powerful belief and found themselves being punished by the higher authorities. Now the geniuses like Galileo no longer holds an opinion in this Post Truth Era.

The prisoners are already tired of waiting for their death. They are the scapegoats for the bad deeds of powerful people. There is no need of wearing the attire of sage. The poor people who are being punished already knows the truth. In each and every minute their truth was getting revealed to the society. The Guards had putted the marks of their torture on the skin of the prisoners. There was horrid and repulsive condition at the prison. Thick layer of dirt has covered the face of the prisoners just like the thick cover on the truth.

The Guard is habituated of the surrounding. He is snuffing the dead  bodies to clear his head of sins. He had hanged thousands of innocent people on gallows, the wooden frame. He is like a 'Voyeur' who gains pleasure by watching other who are naked. He was patrolling for the hours and was entertained by hearing the painful voices of the prisoners.

 Conclusion

Soyinka thus literally means, that he believes  The power structure "thrills" in the pain of even basic human excretion, and the voyeur guard, conscious of his own actions, debases his own humanity past the point of return. Soyinka suffers not mere imprisonment but the evils of torture. The live burial functions not only as a metaphor, but, for Soyinka, as almost an actuality.

Junagadh Conference

34th International Conference organised by Bhakta Kavi Narsinh Mehta University at Agriculture University, Junagadh

Hello my dear friends, I am writing this blog for keeping my memory of Junagadh conference. Actually I have enjoyed a lot and that’s why it become more necessary to share my experience here on digital platform.

Let me start from the beginning. At first my Dad came to drop me at Ganesh Toyota Showroom. I already booked tickets in RK travels. But the bus was late than usual and it arrive at 1 am.

Finally I took the bus and reached Junagadh around 5.30 am. I went to Railway waiting room and freshen up myself then the ticket collector came asking for tickets. I said I don’t have I will leave room soon and that humble man smiled and allow me to stay. I left that room around 6 am and reached my destination at 6.30. I took rickshaw from Railway station. The rickshaw man asking for 100 rs to drop me near Agriculture University but I neglected. Then I decided to take second rickshaw, he ask for 40 rs and I chose it finally to reach my destination. He dropped me there at second gate of Agriculture University and I don’t have change of 40. So I ask him for keeping 30 only, he smiled and took 30 rs. Then I reached my guest house, it was at ‘Krishi vaigyanik bhavan”. Awesome arrangement made by the team of BKNMU students and teachers.

Then I waited for my roommate Axansh. She reached there around 8.30. We went for breakfast and registration. We ate Idli, sambhar, chutni, and so many delicious things. We felt like we were attending reception of marriage ceremony. It was awesome.

Then we went for listening plenary session and then it took around 1.30 for the beginning of lunch. There was longest line. Luckily we entered early and find our place there. There were super amazing items.

After that we went to the main destination that was paper presentation schedule. I reached my classroom 203 and with the help of one of the student’s cable, inserted my ppt in computer. I was waiting for my turn. Finally it came around 4.14 PM. I gave my best and the whole class was clapping.

OMG it was the best experience ever. I was so happy at that moment when all teachers and colleagues were praising me. But I don’t know what happen to my roomie Axansh. She didn’t praised or said one word of appreciation. I appreciate her presentation on next day though. Okay may be she doesn’t like my idea.

Actually my topic was ‘consequences of irresponsible decision in the work of f. Scott Fitzgerald. I justified my ppt and finally at the end met my guide OM sir. He asked me how was it and I said awesome, he told me to start preparing for next RAC(sem 2). Naresh Solanki sir, who was the chairperson in my session, praised me in front of OM sir. It was really precious moment. He also asked me whether I want to do job at BKNMU as an assistant professor. They will pay me more coz of my GSET qualification, but I told him that my father was refusing. I wanted to do job but I don’t know why I am not forcing my father, may be becoz of the bond with Bhavnagar friend which doesn’t allow me to go somewhere else. Whatever, one day I have to leave this place and may be my friend will also leave this super soon. Let’s not talk about that thing. Now come to my point, evening time which was spent nicely in room with Axansh. We did a lot of talking on spirituality, philosophy. Her thoughts were totally different from mine thoughts. We enjoyed then we went  for dinner, it was again super amazing with lots of varieties like, tiny rotli pizza, Manchurian, dhokla, chutney, paneer sabji, olo rotlo, rotli, paratha, salad , achar etc. at night there was cultural evening which we all four fiends’ me, Axansh, Poonam, Dishita were enjoying at the beginning but soon got bored because its like same faces in different costumes on stage we got tired watching them.

After that axansh left, then dishita, then poonam. At last I left at 11.10 pm. I reached my room and slept early coz of travel sickness. We woke up next morning around 6 am and went for breakfast. It was again so delicious, French fries and butter bread were awesome. Then we went for plenary session just listened one or two speakers then left auditorium and waited for lunch. Finally after taking meal me and Axansh went to our room for freshen up. Now Axansh has to present her paper. We reached engineering building late but we manage. Axansh has delivered her presentation confidently. It was awesome. Finally we are free after feedback session and taking certificates. Axansh left early.

I left my room around 6.30 pm and then I started walking coz my bus was around 12 am. I reached majewdi gate at 8.30 pm and there I ate some snacks. Then Yesha di reached at 11.30 we had some talk. And in bus we talked a lot. Obviously professional talk with some personal element. I enjoyed her company. We finished our conversation around 2.30 am. Finally we slept and reached nari chokdi at 5.15 am. Luckily I woke up on time. And then took longest sleep at my home sweet home. So this is my Junagadh story. Thanks you.

The Birth of Modern Literature

Q1. Explain the Birth of Modern Literature in detail

Answer:-

The historical background

This period sees the end of reign of Queen Victoria. The stability which the previous age has enjoyed, that also came to an end with wars. The very first was Boer war by Africans against colonizers. There was violent imperialism which diverts the attention to social problems. There were so many social reforms along with political passions. The growth of Labour party was one of the political issues in modern era. There was decline of agriculture and birth of urbanization.

Literary Features of the age

i)                    The spread of education

Education was now available to all. Poorest can also take advantage of education. Literacy became normal rather than unusual thing. There were larger markets for all types of fiction. In Modern Era there was new demand for work in educational field.

ii)                   Enormous output of books

Authors and publishers had started publishing books on wide range. There were pot boilers (books on public demand and popularity) for financial growth in literary field. Hence, art was sacrificed to business.

iii)                 The Literature of social purpose

With the spread of literacy there came new awakening for social life. Writers were dealing with social evils in their work of art. The problem or discussion play and the novel of social purpose were very common in this Era.

iv)                 The Dominance of the novel

First time in history, the novel became dominant form. Semi-educated people understand novel in better way than poetry.

v)                  The Rebirth of Drama

Drama again appears as an important literary form after ages. There was creative and significant drama on social purpose.

vi)                 Experiments in Literary forms

Experiments were made in Poetry, Drama and Novel forms. There was evolvement of new forms on the basis of new demand of the people. There were less experiments in poetry and more in novels.

The Novelist: Thomas Hardy

Thomas Hardy OM (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, including the poetry of William Wordsworth. he gained fame as the author of novels such as Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895). Many of his novels concern tragic characters struggling against their passions and social circumstances, and they are often set in the semi-fictional region of Wessex; initially based on the medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom.

The Dramatist: George Bernard Shaw

George Bernard Shaw[1] (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950), known at his insistence simply as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist. He wrote more than sixty plays, including major works such as Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1912) and Saint Joan (1923). With a range incorporating both contemporary satire and historical allegory, Shaw became the leading dramatist of his generation, and in 1925 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Poet: William Butler Yeats

William Butler Yeats[a] (13 June 1865 – 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet, dramatist, prose writer and one of the foremost figures of 20th-century literature. His earliest volume of verse was published in 1889, and its slow-paced and lyrical poems display debts to Edmund Spenser, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and the poets of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His first significant poem was "The Island of Statues", a fantasy work that took Edmund Spenser and Shelley for its poetic models. The piece was serialized in the Dublin University Review. Yeats wished to include it in his first collection, but it was deemed too long, and in fact, was never republished in his lifetime. Quinx Books published the poem in complete form for the first time in 2014.

The War Poets: Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen

A war poet is a poet who participates in a war and writes about their experiences. Rupert Brooke (3 August 1887 – 23 April 1915) was an English poet known for his idealistic war sonnets written during the First World War, especially "The Soldier".

Siegfried Loraine Sassoon (8 September 1886 – 1 September 1967) was an English war poet, writer, and soldier. Decorated for bravery on the Western Front,[1] he became one of the leading poets of the First World War. His poetry both described the horrors of the trenches and satirised the patriotic pretensions of those who, in Sassoon's view, were responsible for a jingoism-fuelled war.

Wilfred Edward Salter Owen MC (18 March 1893 – 4 November 1918) was an English poet and soldier. He was one of the leading poets of the First World War. His war poetry on the horrors of trenches and gas warfare was much influenced by his mentor Siegfried Sassoon and stood in contrast to the public perception of war at the time and to the confidently patriotic verse written by earlier war poets such as Rupert Brooke. Among his best-known works – most of which were published posthumously – are "Dulce et Decorum est", "Insensibility", "Anthem for Doomed Youth", "Futility", "Spring Offensive" and "Strange Meeting".

Conclusion

In this way the modern Era begins in literature with experiments and creativity. New forms emerged and Novel became the dominant literary form. Numbers of books published and readers got plenty of choice. Art was being written for financial gain, such as Pot boilers. For the first time for many years poetry is the least significant of the important literary forms.

Bewajah: Stroy of Heer

Hello my dear friends. Here I am going to write one story. Yes, without any copy paste. this is unique and very strange story with complex plot. In this present Covid time, its become difficult to pass time happily. Lot of things going outside. Lot many are dying. But it is very important to distract our self at home. I hope you all will like the story that I am going to share with you. Okay now let me start without wasting time.

I am always mad about sweet sixteen. I know      something is definitely going to happen in this sweet sixteen age of mine. I am waiting to fall in love truly with someone.
Months passed.....
Oh my God!  its already December month of 2012 and still I am not able to find one true mate. Okay, so now after some day I am going to attend my cousin sister's wedding. I have this feeling that something is definitely going to happen at her wedding. My life is going to take a turn. I am positive.

We used to talk hours and hours on text messages. I shifted to hostel for my graduation. There we used to talk hours and hours on calls. We experienced all ups and downs of relationship in these five years. we attracted for short time to some other person surrounded in our life. but always ended up together. I cried a lot, I had happy moments, I had worst moment. I had fear of parents to get caught. Almost everything happened in these five years of immaturity. But now, Why I am tired of him. Why I want to end this relation now after all the promises we made together of being together forever. Why I wanted it to stop now? well whatever it is now I don't want to continue. Now I only remember all the bad things that he did while being with me. I don't remember any pleasant moments now. I want break up.....and I did in may 2016

October 2016

It's been so long without having any close friend by my side with whom I can share anything. Like I used to do with Swaroop. He tried to reach me out so many time but I gnored him. He met me on my birthday, cried in front of me for being with me again. But I never listened.

Navratri 2016

At evening.......
Oh! he is sitting out there. let me check if he has accepted my request.
Oh my my! He did. He accepted. Oh Holy shit!. Both accepted at same time. what a miracle together. I should reply to this cute Boy first.
ME: Hi dear, what are doing with your mobile all the time. I saw u
HE: How, how did u saw me?. who are you and where are you?
ME: I am living in same society where you are sitting right now
HE: Well I too live here

HE: We just shifted here before a month
ME; Do you have any girlfriend?
HE: Why are you suddenly asking all these personal stuff. well for your kind information, Yes I do have a GF. let me send you her pic
ME: (after looking at the pic) Oh my God she is really pretty. You both are cute couple.

Oh my crush is taken. No chance here. Well it's okay. He is sweet sixteeen, like I used to be before. let him take his own experience.
Next Day.....
Message came from other boy who also did accepted my request
HE: Hi Heer
ME: Hi there
HE; Heer I know you very well and I was trying to become your friend since I saw you. But I never thought that You are going to send me request by all yourself. I am fascinated
ME: well don't flatter yourself. I don't like you
HE: you are lying
Me: No, I am not. Bye

After some days
That other flirty boy's name is Veer. He keep on irritating me until I said yes to him. Now we are quite in relationship. I am happy actually with him. He is so kind, loyal and good boy. And I found out that Veer is the brother of the cute boy with whom I did have crush. Veer is his elder brother. I used to chat with that cute boy too sometime as a good friend only. Okay let me tell you cute boy's name, its Jeet.

2017

I used to have ups and down in relationship again with Veer. I guess he did not want to continue this relationship. I guess he found someone else. He told me I am way too good girl type personality and he did not want to spoil me by being with me. So he left. It's really heartbroken. Because I never want to leave him. But he did. I am devastated. I found little bit happiness in Jeet now. He comforts me and cover his brother's behaviour. But I am happy to have Jeet by my side as a friend. After some month Veer came back to me and realised his mistake. I accepted his apology and Jeet doesn't like it. Jeet stopped talking with me. I am with Veer again. On the other side, Jeet developed his friendship with the left girl of Veer. Actually she is very controlling that's why Veer doesn't like and left her. Now Jeet is happy in her company, her name is Arohi. I am happy with Veer. Everything is going well.

2018 October

Veer ignoring me again because he thinks I am truly falling in love with him. He don't want to fall truly madly in live. He did have some past story about his elder sister who ran away with a a boy. he don't want to repeat his sister's mistake. I assured him i will not force him for anything. But still he found it good to less talk. I am devastated broken again and missing my buddy Jeet who has always comforts me in my hard times. I should say sorry to him for not listening his advice or for letting Veer enter my life again. I will apologise.

2018 Navratri

I apologise a lot to Jeet. He is not replying me. I feel pathetic. At 2 a.m after navratri's end, he texted.

JEET: Okay Heer, apology accepted. But now always listen to me never do that past mistake again. and never talk to Veer again.
ME; Okay, Jeet. Thank you so much for accepting me back in your life. I never want to lose your friendship again.

22 November 2018

I met Jeet for the first time after all these 2 years of friendship. We share very close moments. I am happy with Jeet. I asked him:
ME: what is about your relation with Arohi. I totally forget it.
JEET: Heer you know she is married right?
ME: (shockingly) No i did not
JEET: Heer, I was so happy with her here. But she did not listen to me and went to different town.
ME: Is She going to come back again?
JEET: I really don't know Heer
ME: Okay let's forget about bad memories. Let's have fun right now and enjoy this moment together.

JANUARY 2019

I am so happy with Jeet. But I am so busy with my master's friend all the time. Ignoring Jeet sometime. While chatting with him I used to chat with one of my close friend of master and gave late reply to Jeet that he doesn't like. Fight started.

FEBRUARY 2019

Veer missed me and texted me. I texted him back. Jeet saw our chat. He is so upset with me. He told me to not let Veer enter in my life again. But still I replied. We are having normal conversation only. But Jeet is very angry with me. I don't know what to do now? I am so embarrassed. How to apologise on same mistake again? Oh god I don't want to lose Jeet. But I guess I already did.

MARCH 2019
I was busy in last year of master. Jeet accepted my apology but  halfheartedly. He make very less conversation now. Meanwhile Arohi came back in town. and started seeing Jeet again. Because I sent him away with my own mistakes.
It's been so many months of ups down fight and all. I haven't talked with Jeet for almost 3 months. Navratri Came and again I want him in my life. I could not stop thinking about him.

January 2020

Parents started searching mate for me. I have to keep low profile now. I can't meet Jeet so often. I have to control myself now. Daddy found one Boy from town. I accepted him for engagement. I stopped talking to Jeet and told him that now I will meet him only after marriage. He tried to convince me so many time to remain in his life, to stay, But I can't risk my profile in front of my fiance. Jeet went close to Arohi more because of my disapproval. They both are in relationship happily

October 2020

My engagement broke. I am sad. I want Jeet now, I want him again, Will he come back in my life. It's ok if he want to be with Arohi. I will accept him even. I apologise to Jeet and he again forgiven me but this time obviously his first priority is Arohi. Not me. He will think about Arohi first before me. everytime. Obviously I can't step in someone's life like that. if i did then I have to accept their relationship. But i feel hurt all the time whenever he text Arohi first then me. They used to be online together, offline together. I disliked it. I want my 2018 Jeet back. But I can't now. i know. I used to see their last seen again and again. I fight with Jeet again for ignoring me for Arohi. He told me directly that He did not love me as much as I do. I feel so broken. and same day I texted Veer to meet. He meet me and I told him about his brother. He told me that it's ok if he doesn't love you as much. But little bit he do maybe. So be happy in little bit. I feel comfortable around Veer about sharing my life with him.

2021

I still talk with Jeet, I still like him or love him. He is still with Arohi. His still first priority is Arohi. I am still hurting myself everyday. I am alone again. But happy in little bit happiness. I used to text Veer so less in fear of being caught again by Jeet. I know he doesn't care now. But I don't want to lose whatever little bit friendship we are having..

The End
