Talk on Journalism by Dr Jay Mehta

15th january

After the celebration of kite festival (14th Jan), on the next day we get surprise lecture by Dr. Jay Mehta Sir on Mass Media and Communication. It was very fruitful to get the basic knowledge about media, its development form the ancient time.
There are six major sources of mass media:-

i) Radio
ii) Television
iii) Cinema
iv) Advertisement
v) Newspaper
vi) Digital Media

Things are changing from past to present, from ancient to modern. Earlier there were only one TV channel 'Doordarshan' which is much like 'Dookhdarshan' because you have to wait for the broadcasting of series whole day and at some specific time during night the final red, yellow strips began to show then the programme came. It is much longer wait than usual for any type of show on tv. However if we look at present time then things were totally changed. Now we do not have to wait, there are numbers of channels. We can choose whatever we want to watch.
Mass media is glamour oriented means it present things which are highly glamorous, rarely we find factual things. There is one film "Rann" which is a satire on mass media and its culture.

Radio also plays a vital role since from beginning. It used to spread news from one region to other with interesting songs in between. Aakashvani channel is most popular which is known all over. Radio works with brevity and there are three language used by the RJ, Hindi, English and the local language of the regional area.

Advertisement is also an important section of mass media and communication. There is scope of creativeness in the field of advertisement. It function mainly on language and human psyche. It attacks on all senses of human beings.

For example- 'Santoor' which earlier used to offer spoon as a gift to attracts the typical housewife. They began to but more and more Santoor for the collection of spoons without thinking rationally that in the cost of Santoor, spoon's cost already added. In this way Production companies used to blind peoples through their heavy advertisements.

Cinema is mostly used for serving entertainment purpose. The very first silent film is 'Alam Ara" which opens the door of theatres. And then there were so many films started to release. There is shift from silent to talking, black and white to colorful films. Earlier woman are not allowed to play roles in films because it is consider as something cheap, lowest level. But films are not only for entertainment. It carries serious social issues, focusing on the gap between the rich and poor class. According to latest trend there is much focus on the middle class.

Digital media is famous among youth culture. But there is also fakeness, it spread lies among young people who are easily driven by falseness in this post truth era. There are trolls everywhere, you will not find place to speak with freedom. These are some limitations of Digital media.

Newspaper is also very important which used the language of target audience. There is one word "Presstitute" which is a portmanteau of "Press" and "Prostitute", means media sells themselves and spread lies among peoples through news. Media is always remains under power and it never speak against the power position. But that thing is not good for society. There is need to uncover the corrupt politicians rather than praising them or remaining in their side. That is the beauty of democracy which makes blind and hides the truth and reality. Paid media is never a good idea for the betterment of society.
